EDP1A is a protected agriculture value chain project which focuses on promotion of protected agriculture through establishment of greenhouses, training of farmers and facilitating market linkages in Behsud, Khewa, Surkhroad and Kama districts of Nangarhar province. This project was started in February 2012 and was being implemented by KRA until October 2015. The initial phase of the project included establishment of 300 greenhouse, 1 aggregation center, and 1 greenhouse producers association. The project was expanded in December 2015 which is being implemented by CARD-F IU. Under the expansion phase initially 150 greenhouses were planned to be established in Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces. However, due to less demand from the community the target number of greenhouses was reduced to 63 and out of the remaining 87 greenhouses, 37 greenhouses were changed to broiler farms in the same provinces as part of the EDP 3 and the remaining 50 greenhouses were added to EDP Kunduz. Actual implementation of EDP 1A ended in March 2017. However CARD-F IU continues providing extension services to grantees of this project based on demand and need until December 2017.
The objective of this project is to increase rural income, create rural employment opportunities and stimulate private sector investment in vegetable value chain Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces.
