Economic Development Package 3

Background:

EDP 3 is a poultry value chain intervention focusing mainly on development of commercially viable poultry value chain in Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces. The implementation of this project initially started in Nangarhar in March 2012 and was implemented by ItalTrend until April 2016. The project was expanded to Kunar and Laghman in May 2016 and is being implemented by CARD-F Implementation Unit (IU). In its first phase, the project included establishment of 50 new broiler farms, upgrading of 50 existing broiler farms, establishment of 10 breeder and 6 hatchery farms, 1 poultry feed mill, 1 poultry clinic, 708 small scale layer farms for women, and 1 live bird market, provision of extension services and establishing poultry producers association. The expansion phase of the project covers establishment 400 SSL farms and 50 new broiler farms of which 30 farms planned in Nangarhar, 10 farms in Laghman and 10 farms in Kunar.  Implementation of the project ends in December 2017 however extension services will continue to farmers in 3 provinces.

Objective:

The objective of this project is to increase rural income, create rural employment opportunities, substitute imports and stimulate private sector investment in poultry value chain in Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces.
